Duke faculty teaching DKU students in a small classroom at DKU

DKU offers several opportunities for Duke faculty to teach in new ways and to engage with a global student body and faculty colleagues in China.

At DKU, academic work is intensive and modular. Classes are discussion based, generally enrolling 20 or fewer students. Students typically take two classes over a 7-week term, meeting for 5 hours each week on a Monday-Thursday schedule.

All DKU majors have interdisciplinary and disciplinary components. The former serve as the entry point and primary definition of a students’ academic community. The latter provide specialized training and prepare students for advanced study. Finally, a student’s signature work focuses on a question, problem or issue and includes independent research, a senior thesis or creative production.

More information on the core courses, majors, and electives at DKU, as well as the signature structural features of the curriculum can be found on the DKU website. Teaching opportunities for Duke faculty at DKU range from a single 7-week session, to a semester (two 7-week terms), to a full academic year.

DKU has specific teaching needs as well as opportunities to offer selected elective courses. Inquiries are welcome from faculty in all relevant fields. Faculty who wish to explore opportunities for teaching at DKU should contact us at dkurelations@duke.edu.

While Duke faculty are encouraged to explore teaching opportunities at DKU, it is important to coordinate those efforts with the needs of the home departments or programs at Duke. A faculty member interested in teaching at DKU must therefore write their Chair, DUS and DGS for an endorsement. This request is then forwarded to the divisional dean, who will coordinate it with the leave request process (December 1 deadline for the following year).

Faculty from Duke can also be part of the teaching community in the graduate programs at DKU. For specific opportunities at the graduate level, interested faculty should contact the director of the relevant Master's program for more information.

Duke post-doctoral scholars and advanced graduate students interested in teaching at DKU are invited to contact us at dkurelations@duke.edu for details about the Duke-DKU Global Fellows Program. Global Fellows typically teach two courses over a 5-month stay at DKU. Awards are for one semester or two semesters. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis each fall for the following academic year.

More information about teaching at DKU, including a list of current full-time faculty openings can on the DKU website.
